New Work and Process

New Work and Process

Over the last year I have been creating on a new body of visual art. Often times this is just something I need to do and start working on without a gallery to hang or venue in mind. I am very fortunate to have things like this fall into place and I must admit it makes it easier to have an end date or goal to get everything finished.

I have been working with processes over the last 14 years that start by experimentation and unfold before my eyes as the next step to discovery. I cannot image working any other way. If this did not happen how would I or anyone advance to the next phase? Every carefully picked word is needed to form a sentence and eventually tell a story.

My latest work is called ‘Core’.

-I actually just shipped about one dozen pieces to Illinois for a show that will be opening on August 22 at SIUE (Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville) Check out the blog and show info here! Pat Vivod and Elizabeth Adams Marks are curating the show and have worked hard to find financial supporters with great success! I am very grateful.

While working on the pieces that comprise ‘Core’ I was focused on my intent and the visual outcome I knew I could produce. Along the way I accidentally found a new process. This process was just what I needed. Something so risky that I could ruin a whole panel but alluring enough to make me take the risk. As I write, I think how this process came to me during a great time of transition and runs parallel with my personal life and decision I had and did make. Which leads me into my next body of work, ‘Manifestations’, but that will be another blog post.

Anyhow, I want to share some process images with you and follow up from the last blog posting about my garden and the plants I use to make colors. You may notice that I really love hollyhock! The very last image is a dance that I recently performed using a veil I made with hollyhock and cochineal.
