Black walnut hulls make a wonderful brown dye of varying shades. I have collected, hand opened each hull and dried them for later use. They are sourced organically from local trees. The color from walnut can be extracted with several soakings to get the richest color. When combined with iron it changes from a warm brown to a black brown. There is no need to use alum for this color as it will take up color freely. You might like to experiment with soy milk however....? One ounce of raw dye stuff will color at least a yard of silk, cotton or wool. You can also extract ink concentrate with the hulls. It is a very easy process.
