Exploration of Natural Colors and Processes
September 5 – 9, 2018 -10 am – 5pm – R A W Textiles Studio – St. Johns – Portland, Oregon
Registration Closes- September 1
In this 5 day workshop we will cover various processes such as using natural dyes and tannins for immersion baths, shibori patterning as well as rust printing. We will also use harvested plants to create pattern and color with a technique I developed in 2008 that I call ‘composting’. This method combines the alchemy of plants, minerals, and liquids. All of these techniques will be combined in different ways to explore and challenge each individual’s artistic goals. Given the time allotted we can create small samples to build upon and understand better how various plants and dyes react. From this you can adapt samples to create a finished piece or several of them. We will spend time talking about creating sacred space and respecting nature while working and how to better listen to the subtle vibrations that the plants and mineral give to us while we create. Other things to note will be harvesting, storing and growing.
We will cover:
Making dye extracts, starting an organic indigo vat, rust printing, composting, mordants, modifiers, shibori, printing with thickeners, over dye, developing recipes, harvesting.
Materials included in class fee are cotton and silk for sample making and larger panel of cotton and silk for final projects.
There will be a one hour lunch break (at Cathedral park if weather permitting). I will provide fruits and veggies with dips as well as iced tea or hot tea if you prefer. Please bring food according to your needs.
